I’ve used Claude extensively alongside ChatGPT, Writesonic, and other AI writing tools for real client work. Here’s what you actually need to know.
What Is Claude?
Claude is a large language model built by Anthropic, a safety-focused AI company founded by former OpenAI researchers. The current model family includes Claude Haiku (fast, lightweight), Claude Sonnet (the balanced everyday model), and Claude Opus (the most capable, slowest model). Claude Pro subscribers get access to all three.

Where Claude Excels for Writers
Long-form coherence
Claude maintains argument structure and thematic consistency across long documents better than any other model I’ve tested. Ask it to write a 2,000-word article and the output doesn’t fall apart at the 800-word mark the way GPT-4 often does. The conclusion actually connects to the introduction. The sections build on each other rather than repeating the same point in different words.
Following complex instructions
Give Claude a multi-part brief — write in this style, avoid these words, use this structure, target this audience, aim for this reading level — and it follows all of them. Most models start drifting from complex instructions after a few paragraphs. Claude is unusually good at holding the full set of constraints in mind throughout a long piece.
Voice matching from examples
Paste 3–4 paragraphs of a target writing style and ask Claude to match it — for ghostwriting or maintaining a client’s brand voice — and the output is more accurate than equivalent requests to ChatGPT. It picks up on subtleties: sentence length patterns, vocabulary choices, punctuation habits, degree of formality. Ghostwriters find this particularly valuable.
Large context window
Claude can read and work with very long documents in a single conversation. You can paste an entire book chapter, a full content strategy document, or multiple articles and ask Claude to synthesize, compare, or write something consistent with all of it. This makes it uniquely useful for longer projects where context continuity matters.
Where Claude Falls Short
No web browsing on free tier (and limited on Pro): Unlike ChatGPT Plus, Claude doesn’t browse the web by default. For research that requires current information, you need to bring the sources to Claude rather than having it find them. This is a meaningful limitation for writers covering fast-moving topics.
No image generation: ChatGPT Plus includes DALL-E integration. Claude has no image generation capability. If you need visual content alongside your writing, Claude can’t help there.
